FAGGOT STITCH COMFORT SCARF

What you need:

  • Size 17 needles
  • About 300 feet of solid soft 4-ply yarn (Yarn A) OR 300 feet of interesting bulky yarn
  • About 250 feet of variegated sport-weight yarn (Yarn B)
  • 2 mini balls of fun fur or other novelty yarn, each 25 feet

Directions:

Select one of the versions of the stitch and, holding Yarn A and one mini ball of novelty yarn together, cast on*** the appropriate number of stitches.  Knit in garter stitch until you have used up all the novelty yarn.  Stop the novelty yarn at the end of a row, not in the middle.

Attach Yarn B (if you are not using bulky yarn) and begin pattern stitch.  Continue knitting in pattern until scarf measures 60 inches less what the first Yarn A/novelty combo measured.  Stop Yarn B at the end of a row (not in the middle).  Attach the second mini ball of novelty yarn.

Begin knitting in garter stitch and continue until you have just enough Yarn A/novelty yarn to cast off.  Cast off.  Weave in ends.

  • Knit Version A:  Cast on 10 or 12 stitches (must be even number of stitches) or whatever you need to make a scarf at least 4 inches wide but not wider than 5-inches.

Every Row:  knit 1, *YO, knit 2 together* until the end (do not YO before the last stitch),  knit 1.  Continue until scarf measures 60 inches long.  Cast off.  Weave in ends.

  • Knit Version B:  Cast on 12 stitches (must be multiples of 3) or whatever you need to make a scarf up to 5-inches wide.

Every Row:  *Knit 1, YO, Knit 2 together* until the end of the row.  Continue until scarf measures 60-inches long.

    Cast off.  Weave in ends.

  • Purl Version:  Cast on 12 stitches (must be multiples of 3) or whatever you need to make a scarf up to 5-inches wide.

Every Row:  *Purl 1, YO, Knit 2 together, bring yarn forward* until the end of the row.  Continue until scarf measures 60-inches long.  Cast off.  Weave in ends.

Please sign the Handmade tag with your first name and attach it to your scarf.   ***Many knitters find that the cable cast on works particularly well for scarves.  It is very firm and it looks just like the cast off.  I think you will like it too.

This video shows how easy it is to do:
